Insomniacs Misidentify Angry Faces as Fearful Faces Because of Missing the Eyes: an Eye-Tracking Study
Insomniacs were found to have compromised perception of facial expressions. Through eye movement examinations, here we test the hypothesis that this effect is due to impaired visual attention functions for retrieving diagnostic features in facial expression judgments. 23 individuals with insomnia symptoms and 23 non-insomniac controls completed a task to categorize happy, sad, fearful, and angr...
متن کاملBalanced complexes and complexes without large missing faces
The face numbers of simplicial complexes without missing faces of dimension larger than i are studied. It is shown that among all such (d−1)-dimensional complexes with non-vanishing top homology, a certain polytopal sphere has the componentwise minimal f -vector; and moreover, among all such 2-Cohen–Macaulay (2-CM) complexes, the same sphere has the componentwise minimal h-vector. It is also ve...
متن کاملUniversal representations: The missing link between faces, text, planktons, and cat breeds
With the advent of large labelled datasets and highcapacity models, the performance of machine vision systems has been improving rapidly. However, the technology has still major limitations, starting from the fact that different vision problems are still solved by different models, trained from scratch or fine-tuned on the target data. The human visual system, in stark contrast, learns a univer...
متن کاملThe Missing “Missing Middle”
T he notion that the distribution of firm size in poor countries is characterized by a bimodal distribution with a “missing middle” is a widely accepted fact in development economics (for example, see Krueger 2013). The idea of the missing middle is that there are a large number of small firms, some large firms, but very few medium-sized firms. The purported fact about the missing middle is cit...
متن کاملRemarks on Missing Faces and Generalized Lower Bounds on Face Numbers
We consider simplicial polytopes, and more general simplicial complexes, without missing faces above a fixed dimension. Sharp analogues of McMullen’s generalized lower bounds, and of Barnette’s lower bounds, are conjectured for these families of complexes. Some partial results on these conjectures are presented.
